I hail from London, UK, and am a Master’s student in the Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean lab at UWA. I have always had an interest and passion for marine biology, despite growing up in a big inland city. This led me to pursue my BSc at Newcastle University on the North Sea coast of England, where I wrote my dissertation on Antarctic echinoderm reproductive behaviour. I have been an avid SCUBA diver since my early teenage years, guided by both my parents who have loved the activity for over 30 years. Having spent 3 years studying by the frigid North Sea, I decided I wanted to leave the UK for warmer places to do my Master’s degree. Perth and UWA were the obvious choice, both for the weather and the abundance of exceptional marine life and academic biodiversity. Having learnt more about the topic of fisheries, I joined the Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean lab to write my thesis on one of the most significant impactors on our oceans, fishing. My thesis uses GIS to map the provision of harmful industrial subsidies to high seas fishing in the Indian Ocean basin.
