Undergraduate Majors in Marine Biology/Marine Science

Study for a BSc in marine science at The University of Western Australia (UWA), leading to either a single major BSc in Marine Biology, or an extended major BSc in Marine Science.

The Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean contributes to several undergraduate teaching units in the course of your study. In particular, the third year unit (Level 3) “BIOL3305 Fisheries Science: Foundations and Applications” provides you with a grounding in the foundations of fisheries science, and examines methods and principles of fisheries science for both large-scale and small-scale fisheries around the world. Core elements will include the core data needs in fisheries science including fisheries economics, an introduction to approaches used in assessing the status of aquatic fish and invertebrate populations, and application of fisheries data sets at different spatial scales. In addition, this unit will also consider a range of applied examples from both global and local fisheries. This will also illustrate the growing need to align and partner fisheries science with conservation science, in order to ensure sustainability of fisheries resources for future generations.

Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s

The new Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s (CBM) program at UWA is a four year accelerated program for high-achieving students with an ATAR of 90 or above. Over the first three years you will complete an Extended Major in Marine Science, and a semester of postgraduate study. You can then choose to exit after three years with an Advanced Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Science, or continue with a final year of postgraduate study and be awarded a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Biological Science or Master of Environmental Science at the end of the four years.
